Amanda Yonkers, CO

Amanda Yonkers

Amanda's journey in ophthalmology began when she received her first pair of glasses at 26 months, after being diagnosed with accommodative esotropia and amblyopia. Throughout her early years, she navigated the challenges of wearing an eye patch and bifocal glasses. This firsthand experience ignited her passion for the field of eye care and inspired her to study binocular vision and orthoptics.

Amanda brings forth over a decade of invaluable expertise garnered from her role as an orthoptist treating complex strabismus and amblyopia cases at multi-specialty eye care centers. More recently, her son was diagnosed with strabismus and amblyopia. Her unique perspective as a former patient and parent enables her to empathize deeply with those under her care, while also providing invaluable support to parents in understanding their child's condition.

Amanda completed her Bachelor of Science in biology from UC Irvine, and her orthoptic training at the Ross Eye Institute at SUNY Buffalo. After enduring two snowy winters, she returned to her roots in California, joining the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute as an orthoptist. In 2017, Amanda became an integral part of the Stanford Children’s Hospital, where she contributed by lecturing ophthalmology trainees on binocular vision in addition to her clinical responsibilities within the pediatric ophthalmology department. In 2024, Amanda joined Crescendo MD, a concierge medical practice in Silicon Valley, where she helped establish their pediatric ophthalmology department.

Throughout her career, Amanda has been passionate about advancing the field of orthoptics. She is actively involved with the American Association of Certified Orthoptists, currently serving on the Board of Directors as the Director of Continuing Education. Her past roles include Vice-President, and Scientific Program Chair. Additionally, she is a valued board member of the Foundation for Orthoptic Research and Education in the Americas (FOREA) and serves on the editorial board for the Journal of Binocular Vision and Ocular Motility.
