Dr. Nyong’o, MD, FAAO knows first-hand that vision goes beyond the self; it bonds a family. Dr. Nyong’o’s daughter electrified him when she smiled for the first time, as he held her on his last day of paternity leave.
Dr. Nyong’o earned an Sc.B. in Neuroscience Cum Laude from Brown University and his M.D. from the University of California San Francisco. He is a Clinician Educator at Stanford University in the Department of Ophthalmology and at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital. Dr. Nyong’o diagnoses and treats conditions that affect the faculty of eyesight, the dominant sense organ in babies and young children. His personalized approach to medicine and surgery for each child and each adult with strabismus is designed to maximize the development and restoration of one’s innate vision potential.
All children maintain a unique capacity to grow and flower. Yet, up to 4% of children will suffer attenuation of this potential due to ocular disorders that blur and fade their impression of the world. The good news is that doctors can aid parents in identifying, clarifying, and overcoming these sight disorders. Since 2006, Dr. Nyong’o has supported several thousand families by collaborating with primary and specialty care doctors in Silicon Valley, the United States, and internationally.
Dr. Nyong’o served as the inaugural Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology at the Palo Alto Medical Foundation (PAMF) where during his 15-year tenure he also led philanthropy and research. Among his innovative contributions, Dr. Nyong’o generated best practices for early, safe detection of sight disorders via large-scale preschool vision screenings. His work for Bay Area families is ongoing.
